We stock it or we do not list it

Assay is a supply house on Gewel Street in Isando, ten minutes from the cargo terminal, and the whole business runs on one rule: if it is on this page it is in the building. Laboratory supply in this country has a bad habit of quoting a fourteen-week import lead time and calling it stock, and a clinic that has run out of specimen bottles on a Tuesday morning cannot wait fourteen weeks. So we hold depth instead of breadth. A working range of glass, plastics, tips, bottles and disposal, in the sizes that actually move, and we would rather tell you we do not carry something than take the order and then go looking for it. Anything placed before nine goes onto that afternoon courier: most of Gauteng has it by first thing, the rest of the country by the second morning. Schools, day clinics, municipal water labs, food plants and a fair number of farms buy off this list every month, and it is the repeat lines we watch the shelf on.

How an order leaves the bench

Every order is packed by hand at one bench at the back of the building, and glass is packed by somebody who has broken enough of it to know where it goes. Beakers and flasks are sleeved singly and then double-boxed, measuring cylinders travel lying down in a foam cradle rather than standing upright, and reagent cases go in last so nothing heavy ever ends up sitting on them. The slip in the box carries batch and lot numbers against anything that has them, because a municipal lab in the middle of an audit needs that piece of paper far more than it needs the invoice. We also photograph every glass order before it is taped shut. It costs the bench about forty seconds and it has settled every damage argument we have had in six years: if it left here whole we can show you it left here whole, and if it did not, the replacement goes on the next courier without anybody having to prove anything first.
