One counter, since 1988

38 years · 1 400 tables · 9 000 decks · 4 days Baize is a counter and a workroom on Op de Bergen Street in Troyeville. Half of it is stacked with decks, chips, cloth, dice and shoes; the other half is a bench where tables come in to be stripped and re-clothed. We supply the poker rooms in Melville and Edenvale, the social clubs that run a Wednesday, the school chess leagues on the East Rand, the church halls doing a Friday night fundraiser, and a fair number of people who simply want a proper deck on the kitchen table. Everything on the shelf is here because somebody asked for it twice. We do not stock novelty sets, we will not print your face on a chip, and we will tell you when the cheaper option is the one that lasts longer.

A room is set up long before anybody sits down

Right cloth, right light, chips that stack, a deck that comes back flat. Most of what goes wrong at a table was decided a week earlier at a counter, by somebody who had done it before.

Re-clothing, and cutting cloth to size

The bench at the back does one job: it takes the cloth off a table and puts a better one on. Staples out, the foam checked and packed where it has gone soft, the old speed cloth lifted whole so it can be used as a pattern, then new stock cut with 80 mm of drop all the way round and pulled tight from the centre out. An oval poker table is a day. A full-size snooker bed is three, and we do those on site, because nobody moves a slate twice if they can help it. If you would rather do it yourself, we will cut cloth to your measurements off the bolt and send it with the staples, a pull bar and a page of instructions written for somebody who has never done it. Bring the old cloth in with you if you still have it. It saves an argument about whether the table is 213 or 220 across.
