Come and lie on one first

All six live in the studio on Lower Main Road, Observatory. Practise on them for a morning and then decide — the Wednesday evening and Saturday morning classes are open to anyone.

A workshop behind the studio

Bolster started in a garage in Observatory in 2019, because I could not find a bolster in this country that stayed firm past its first year. The first fifty were sewn on a domestic machine at my kitchen table and sold off a trestle at the Saturday market on Albert Road. There are three of us now, in a workshop behind the Lower Main Road studio. The cork comes from Portugal because nobody grows it here, the wool is spun in the Karoo and the canvas is milled in KwaZulu-Natal. Everything after that happens in this room.
