The work happens between the sessions

A coaching practice in Greyton. These are the tools we hand out at the end of a session and read back at the start of the next one.

The workbook everything else hangs off

Twelve Weeks began as a photocopied stack I handed out in 2019 because people kept losing the notes we made together. It is now the only thing every client gets, whether we meet on the mountain path or speak on a call from Gqeberha. One spread a week. The left page is the week you have just had, the right is the one you are walking into. There is no motivational quote anywhere in it, no habit grid with little squares to tick, and nothing to fill in that you would not have thought about anyway. It is printed in Cape Town on 120gsm uncoated stock and sewn rather than glued, so it opens flat on a kitchen table without being held down and week nine does not fall out. Getting that right took three printers and the better part of two years.

First conversation is free

Half an hour on the phone or on the stoep, nothing to sign at the end of it. Most people work out what they actually need in that half hour, and a third of them decide they do not need me.

How a season runs

One — We walk. The first proper session is two hours on the Boesmanskloof path, or the flat river road if walking is not on the table. Nobody takes notes and nothing gets decided. Two — We write it down. Whatever came out of the walk gets narrowed to three lines on the first spread of the workbook. Three lines, not thirty. This is the hardest part and it usually takes a second sitting. Three — Twelve weeks. You do the work. We speak for forty minutes every second Thursday with the workbook open on both ends of the call. If a week goes badly you write that down too, in the same handwriting. Four — We stop. At the end of the twelve there is a long conversation about whether to run another season or leave it there. Roughly half of people leave it there, which is the outcome the whole thing is built for.

Walks start at the church square, Tuesday to Thursday, half past six in summer and seven in winter.
