Twenty-two years on the same corner of the N14

Dissel started in 2004 in a shed behind the show grounds, building two trailers a year for farmers who kept breaking the ones they bought. Same corner today, eleven people on the floor.

How a Dissel is put together

Every trailer starts on the same steel jig, and the jig has not moved since 2011. The chassis is tacked square on it, the drawbar and the suspension mounts are set off the same datum, and nothing is welded out freehand. That is the only reason a Veld built this month will take a drawbar or a hatch off one built eight years ago. The finished chassis goes to the galvanisers in Kimberley and comes back hot-dip coated inside and out, tubes included. It is slower than paint and it costs more, and it is the difference between a trailer that rusts to pieces behind a shed and one that gets sold on twice. Then it is loaded to full GVM with sandbags and driven over our own corrugated strip on the far side of the yard. We check the welds, the bearings and the hitch afterwards, and the card we sign goes into the jockey wheel box with the build number written on it.

Come and stand next to one

We build to order. A trailer runs six to nine weeks; tents, kitchens and spares go out on the courier within three days. The floor is open weekdays from seven, Saturdays until noon.
