The kiaat comes off the mills outside Tzaneen and the saligna off a plantation block above Storms River. Both arrive here rough-sawn and both sit stacked in the shed for a season before anyone cuts into them, because a board that has not settled will move again after it is a door. Blackwood we buy a tree at a time, whenever a plantation above Grabouw takes one out. Every door is hung on a steel test frame in the workshop before it goes anywhere — swung, latched, marked, and swung again the next morning once the shop has cooled down. A pivot takes eight to ten weeks from the day the deposit clears, a stable or a louvre door about four, and we deliver them ourselves on our own truck anywhere between Cape Town and Mossel Bay.
