We opened on Rosherville Road in 2009 with one pallet of strapping, a tensioner and a bakkie, selling mostly to the panel shops around Denver. It is different now: fruit exporters, two removal companies, a glass merchant in Germiston, and a few hundred owner-drivers who come in for a set of straps because the last set was cut off a load somewhere on the N3. The yard is open to the street. You can drive in, pull a strap through a ratchet, put a thumb on the webbing and decide with your hands instead of off a photograph. Nobody here minds. Everything on the shelf we have loaded with ourselves at some point. When we say a 35mm strap will hold what you are carrying, it is because we have tied that load down and seen it come off the other end still square.
We do not stock ratchets under a tonne. They exist, they are cheap, and they let go exactly when a load shifts coming down Van Reenen — so they are not on the shelf, and we are not ordering them in for you either. We do not sell strapping by weight without telling you the break strain, and we will ask what is going in the crate before we hand over a coil. Twelve millimetre strap on an export crate is a claim waiting to be written. And if what you actually need is a bigger truck or a decent pallet rather than more strapping, we will tell you so and you can keep your money. It has cost us sales. It is also why the same two removal firms have bought here for eleven years.
