Everything here was in the ground this week

Market garden and farm shop on the R316, twenty minutes outside Caledon.

See what we have this week

Cut on Friday, sold on Saturday

Nothing gets sprayed and nothing gets waxed, so what you take home has a shorter life than a supermarket vegetable and tastes like it should. We cut on Friday afternoon for the Saturday market and on Tuesday night for the Wednesday collections. Whatever does not sell goes to the pigs rather than into cold storage for a fortnight.

Four hectares, and two families we buy from

Most of it grows here, on four hectares between the R316 and the Riviersonderend. What we cannot grow in enough quantity — potatoes through winter, most of the brassicas — comes from two families we have bought from for years, one in Philippi on the Cape Flats and one outside Napier. That is why the box changes every week and why we will not publish a fixed list. In March it is heavy with tomatoes, peppers and beans. In August it is roots, leeks and whatever greens came through the wind. We pack what is ready, not what a menu says should be.
