A conti suit is two pieces, jacket and trouser, in 65/35 poly-cotton at 260 grams. The weight is the whole argument. Anything lighter goes at the knee inside a season, and anything heavier and nobody wears the jacket after ten in the morning. The trouser has a deeper seat and a knee that is shaped rather than cut straight, because the men who buy these spend half the day down on one. Rule pocket on the right leg, proper gusset at the crotch. The jacket runs generous through the shoulder so it goes on over a jersey in June. Sizes run on the chest, 32 through 46, even numbers only. If you fall between two, take the bigger one — a trouser waist can come in, a shoulder cannot go out. Hemming is free and takes two days. Bring the boots the trousers will be worn with. A safety boot adds twenty millimetres, and every hem we do without the boots comes back.

Lime knit with two 50mm reflective bands, class 2, and a zip rather than velcro so it does not gape when you bend over. It will go through forty washes before the tape starts to dull. Take the size up if it is going over a conti jacket.

HDPE shell with six vents across the crown, a six-point harness and a ratchet at the back you can work one-handed. White, SABS approved, with slots either side for ear muffs or a visor. Replace it five years from the date stamped inside, or the day it takes a knock.
