The cloth comes off the mill at Zwelitsha, discharge-printed the old way — the white pattern is lifted out of the indigo with lime paste, not printed onto it. We choose two bolts a season and cut the whole rail from them, so a dress and a doek bought four months apart still match at a wedding.

Nomvuyo Sikhakhane has cut every pattern in this workroom since 2009. She trained on umbhaco in Ngqeleni, still sews the panel bands herself, and takes four of those dresses a month and not a fifth.
