Who fills your cylinders

We opened on Main Road in 2011, two doors up from the station, because everything we dive is inside twenty minutes of the front door. Windmill and Long Beach when the south-easter is up, Partridge Point and Castle Rocks once it drops, A-Frame when neither is working. The water sits between 10 and 14 °C on the False Bay side and goes to 9 °C on the Atlantic in midsummer, which is why we stock 5 mm suits and not 3 mm ones, and why the first thing we ask about a wetsuit is your chest and not your height. The kelp is thickest from April through September, and that is also when the visibility is best: twelve to fifteen metres on a good winter morning, three on a bad summer one. Cylinders are filled here on the premises by Ntando, who has run the compressor since 2014 and who will turn away an out-of-date test whether you are a customer or a friend. Filters go in on schedule, the air is tested quarterly by an independent lab, and the certificate hangs behind the counter if you want to read it.
