We sell what we use

We keep about ninety hives between Napier and Bredasdorp, so everything on these shelves has been through a season in our own yard before it reaches yours. A box that swells shut after one wet winter, a smoker that will not stay lit past the third frame, a veil you cannot see through in flat afternoon light — we find those out ourselves and they come off the list. That is the whole buying policy, and it is why the range is short.

Woodware, tools and what comes out of the hive

Cold-extracted, strained once

The honey comes off the supers in the shed behind the shop, spun cold and put through one coarse mesh, which takes the wax out and leaves the pollen in. Nothing goes near a warming cabinet at any point, so it sets firm somewhere around June and tastes different from one February to the next depending on what was flowering. Stand the jar in a bowl of warm water for ten minutes and it pours again.

The flow comes off the fynbos in February

Erica and buchu open late down here, so the supers come off in the last week of February and the extraction runs into the first week of March. If you want honey off that flow, order it before the end of March. After that there is nothing until the next one.
