A tag and a weight are evidence

A stock theft case turns on whether you can prove the animal was yours, and a tag number written down on the day it went in is what proves it. An auction weigh-in turns on whether your scale and the buyer's scale agree, which they will if yours has been checked since the last drought. Everything we sell is here to put a number on an animal and keep it there. We do not sell the paperwork, but the paperwork only holds because the tools did. We work our cattle on a Wednesday, in the dark, before the shop opens. Anything that jams, leaks or has to be fixed with a spanner at half past five does not get stocked.
