Most of it comes down to millimetres
A wheelchair seat 40 mm too wide lets the person slide sideways, and by the third week the shoulder is sore and the chair is standing in the passage. A walker set 30 mm too high pushes the elbows up and takes the weight off the legs, which is the opposite of what it is for.
We measure hip width sitting down, and handle height at the wrist with the arm hanging straight. Bring the person if you can, or bring the measurements and a photograph of the doorway. The common sizes are on the floor in Durbanville, so you can try three chairs in an afternoon instead of ordering one and hoping.
DELIVERY AND HIRE
We bring it and we set it up
Anything bigger than a crutch goes out on our own bakkie. We carry it in, set it up in the room it will actually be used in, and take the packaging away with us. A ramp gets checked against the real step, not the one described over the phone. Delivery is free in Durbanville, Bellville, Brackenfell and Kuils River, and R180 further out.
After a hip or a knee replacement most people need a commode and a rollator for about six weeks and then never again. Those come out of the hire pool at R450 a month with a R1 000 deposit, and if you decide to keep it the hire comes off the price.
