Two shops now, Woodstock and Braamfontein, with eleven people cutting between them. Everything on the shelf is mixed here in batches of forty litres, small enough that we can change a formula the same week somebody tells us it is not working on their hair. Those are the only numbers worth writing down.
Zanele Mtshali spent six years in salons that kept a relaxer trolley next to the basin and one set of instructions for hair that was not hers. She opened Krul in a back room on Trill Road in 2017 with one chair, a kettle and a shelf she mixed herself, because nothing she could buy in Cape Town did what she needed it to do. Braamfontein came in 2023, after two years of people driving down from Joburg for a cut. The rule in both shops has not moved: nobody touches your hair until they have felt it wet and dry, and nobody sells you a jar of anything you have not had put on your head first. If a cut goes wrong, come back inside two weeks and we fix it for nothing.
