The numbers people actually ask about

SENSOR — 4K at 30 frames a second, f/1.8 glass, 32 megapixel stills. TRIGGER — 0.18 seconds from movement to shutter, 0.4 seconds to reset for the next frame. BATTERY — 110 to 140 days on eight lithium AA cells at about forty triggers a night. INFRARED — 24 no-glow LEDs, clean out to 22 metres, nothing visible to anything standing in front of it. STORAGE — up to 512GB, and it writes over the oldest files instead of stopping when the card fills. HOUSING — IP66, tested from minus five to fifty-two degrees, which covers a Kalahari afternoon and a Drakensberg night.

Buffalo on the pump line, 02:14

This came off a Sentinel bolted to a windmill on a farm outside Hoedspruit. Nine seconds after the trigger the herd was gone. The camera had already written the file and gone back to sleep.

How the pictures reach you

ON THE CARD Every camera writes to the card first, always. Pull it on your next drive round, put it in the reader in the bakkie and you have the lot. ON THE PHONE The Sentinel takes a Vodacom or MTN data SIM and sends a compressed still inside about ninety seconds of the trigger. Roughly R60 a month at forty images a night. WHEN THERE IS NO SIGNAL Most of the farms we deal with have one bar at the house and nothing at the waterhole. A camera on the card still works out there. A camera on a SIM does not, and we will tell you that before you pay.
