Hot-rolled steel, welded in Salt River

We cut, weld and dress every frame in the shop on Brickfield Road, out of hot-rolled section rather than the folded galvanised stuff the merchants sell as steel. It is heavier, it takes a weld properly, and the sightline stays thin enough that the window looks like it belongs in the wall instead of like something screwed into it. Everything on this page is a standard size, primed grey and ready to glaze.

NC1 Casement Window

The standard opening light half the Southern Suburbs was built with — one fixed pane, one side-hung casement, 1022 by 949 to drop into a brick opening without anybody cutting a thing. Welded from hot-rolled section, dressed by hand and delivered primed grey with the hinges already hung. The rebate is deep enough to bed 4 mm glass in putty properly rather than relying on a bead to hold it. If you are pulling out a tired old NC1, the new one goes straight back into the same hole.

ND2 Side-Hung Window

Two lights side-hung on brass-pinned steel hinges, 1511 by 1200, which is the bedroom and stoep-wall size we make more of than anything else on the list. The hinges are pinned rather than riveted, so a frame that has been painted forty times can still be taken apart by the next person. It comes primed and unglazed with the fasteners in a bag taped to the mullion. Give it a coat of enamel in the first month and it will still be closing properly in fifty years.

Top-Hung Fanlight

A shallow top-hung light, 1022 by 494, for above a door or high on a bathroom wall where you want air without anybody being able to get an arm through it. It opens on a single peg stay, and the stay is fitted before it leaves the shop. Takes 4 mm clear or obscure glass. This is the cheapest way to get real steel into a house, and it is the one we sell most of every December.

Pivot Door, 2.4 m

Two point four metres of 50 mm box section balanced on a floor pivot, so a door weighing eighty kilograms swings shut under one hand. The pivot is set into the screed, which means the slab has to be prepared before the frame arrives — we send the setting-out drawing the day you pay the deposit, not the week it ships. Primed grey, unglazed, and made in this one size unless you ask us otherwise. Ten working days, and we bring it out on our own flatbed.

Bronze Casement Fastener

Cast bronze, filed and polished on the bench, with the cam action that pulls a tired frame tight against its rebate instead of just holding it shut. It is the cheapest thing you can do to a draughty old steel window and the one that makes the most difference in a southeaster. Stand inside the room to work out the hand — it is the side the handle sits on. The screws are in the box and they are bronze too, because a steel screw in a bronze fitting weeps rust down the paint inside a season.

Peg Stay, 250 mm

Black japanned steel, 250 mm, with five holes so you can hold a light open at whatever angle a Highveld afternoon allows. Japanning is a baked lacquer rather than a paint, so it does not chip off the pin in the first week the way a sprayed stay does. Sold with its pin and matching screws. Buy two if you are doing a whole room, because the one you take off the old window has usually been bent straight twice already.

Before you order

Measure the brick opening, not the old frame, and measure it in three places, because steel is unforgiving about a wall that has settled. We build 10 mm of tolerance into every standard unit and send the frame primed, so it wants a coat of enamel within a month of going in or a Cape winter will find the one spot you missed. Glazing is not included: the rebates are cut for 4 mm clear and any glazier in town will cut to the sizes printed on your invoice. Delivery is R450 anywhere inside the metro, and we crate for Gauteng and the Eastern Cape on a Thursday. If your opening is not on this list, send the sizes through — a made-to-measure frame takes about three weeks and runs roughly a fifth more than the nearest standard.
