Chlorine, cleaners, pumps and covers, over the counter in Boksburg

A two-man pool shop on the East Rand. Bring us a bottle of your water and we will tell you what it needs before we sell you anything.

What the water actually needs, week by week

There are two of us. Wandile is behind the counter six days a week and I am on the bakkie most mornings, so whoever you speak to has had their hands in a pool that same day. We started in 2009 in a bay behind the panelbeater and moved into the shopfront in 2016, when the shelf outgrew the bay. We stock what we actually use ourselves — chlorine, acid, floc, a handful of nets and brushes, sand filters, pumps, and covers cut to fit. The honest weekly routine on the Highveld is smaller than most people are sold. Scoop the leaves, empty the weir basket, brush the walls where the sun hits hardest, run the pump long enough for the water to turn over once, and test before you dose anything. Cheap unstabilised chlorine burns off by lunchtime in December, so you buy it three times over a summer and still end up with a green pool in January. Stabilised granules cost more on the shelf and less over the season, and that is the whole argument.

A green pool comes back for about R900 and five days

Floc, a bag of acid, a filter service, and running the pump twice as long as you want to. Drop a sample off on the Monday and it is usually swimmable by the Friday.

Ten years I fought that pool. Now I test it on a Saturday and that is it.
