Cut and sewn on Bree Street

The workroom is two rooms on the first floor above the shops at the top end of Bree Street — three machines, a cutting table long enough to take a full bolt, and a window that faces the wrong way in summer. We buy 19-momme sand-washed silk by the bolt and cut it flat on that table rather than on a stand, because bias-cut silk moves under your hands and you cannot chase it. Every seam in every piece is French-finished by hand: folded, stitched, turned and stitched again, which is slow, and is most of the reason a slip costs what it does. Nothing is made in a run larger than forty, and when a colour is finished it is finished.
