Where we are, and why it is worth the drive

The shop is on Piet Retief Street, three doors up from the garage, and the observatory road turns off fifteen minutes north of it. We are open ten to five on weekdays, nine to one on Saturdays, and later than that on any evening somebody has driven a long way to fetch a telescope. Sutherland sits at 1 450 metres on a plateau with no city inside 300 kilometres, which is why the observatory is up here and why you get somewhere near 250 usable nights a year. Come on the dark half of the month, park where the streetlight does not reach, and you will watch the Milky Way put a shadow on the ground, which is the part nobody believes until it happens to them.

Work your weekend around the dark half of the month

A near-full Moon washes out everything except the Moon. The same telescope on the same hill shows you three times as much in the week either side of new moon, and it costs nothing to plan for.
