Two surgeries on Wellington Road

Cusp is on the ground floor of the Oakhurst building at 24 Wellington Road, between the pharmacy and the church hall. Parking is off Kort Street and the entrance is level — no step and no lift. There are two surgeries. Both face north, both have a window that opens, and both have the screen on the wall in front of the chair rather than a light box in another room. The waiting room has four seats in it and is usually empty, which is the whole point of booking one chair at a time. We are open Monday to Thursday until 17h00, Friday until 15h00, and Saturday morning until half past twelve. Two slots are held back every weekday for people in pain.

The bench in the back room

Behind the second surgery is a bench with an intra-oral scanner, a five-axis mill and a small furnace. Deon Fourie works it three days a week and has been a dental ceramist since 1998. A crown starts as a scan instead of a tray of impression putty. The block is lithium disilicate — a glass-ceramic about as hard as your own enamel — and it is milled, then stained by hand against the two teeth on either side of the gap so it does not end up sitting in your mouth looking whiter than everything around it. Twenty minutes in the furnace and it is finished. Most crowns take two visits. If the tooth is straightforward and you can give up an afternoon, Deon will sometimes do it while you wait. Nothing goes into a courier bag and nothing waits a week in Bellville.

What a first visit costs and how long it takes

  1. Phone 021 975 4180 or use the form at the bottom of this page. Charlene answers between 07h30 and 17h00 and will give you the first slot that is genuinely free.
  2. Bring your medical aid card and your ID, and a list of anything you take daily. If another practice X-rayed you in the last two years, ask them to email the files across — we would rather not repeat them.
  3. Forty minutes in the chair. Fifteen of those are Marli looking, counting and writing down what she finds, tooth by tooth, while it comes up on the screen in front of you.
  4. Two bitewing X-rays unless yours are recent. R620 for the examination and R380 for the pair, so a first visit with nothing else done comes to R1 000.
  5. If work is needed you get it in writing the same day — every item priced, the medical aid portion worked out, and the gap at the bottom. Nothing is started on a first visit unless you are in pain.
  6. Pain is the exception. Phone before 09h00 and one of the two emergency slots is yours; you will be seen that day, even if it is only enough to get you comfortable until a proper appointment.
