Kwinkslag

Two languages, one hour, no interval

Ruan Kotzé takes the Kwinkslag set to twenty-six towns between September and March. Afrikaans and English in the same hour, and the material moves wherever the room does.

Ten minutes from the Baxter

Cut from the second night at the Baxter in March. The full special runs sixty-eight minutes.

Ruan Kotzé

He grew up in Bellville, in a house where the radio was on all day and nobody let a sentence go past unanswered. He started doing five-minute spots above a pub in Durbanville in 2015 and was not paid for a single one of them for two years. The five years after that were year-end functions, church halls, farm-stall fundraisers and one very long night in a bowls club in Vredenburg. That is where the act got built. A room that does not want you yet teaches you more than a room that already does. He works in Afrikaans and English in the same set because that is how the talk actually runs at his mother's table, and because the joke is often in the gap between the two. Nothing gets translated. The material is his own, all of it, written on the drive home while it is still annoying him.
