The orchestra

Algoa Symphony is a resident orchestra of seventy-two players based at the Feather Market Hall in Gqeberha. Twenty-nine of us are on full contracts; the rest teach, study or hold day jobs and come in on Tuesday and Thursday evenings to rehearse.

A season runs February to November — twelve main-stage concerts here, four touring nights at the Guy Butler Theatre in Makhanda and the Guild Theatre in East London, and a schools morning before every programme. Tickets are R120 to R380, under-18s R60, and the back four rows go for R80 on the door.

I have lived in Gqeberha forty years and I did not know the Feather Market could sound like that. We sat three rows from the timpani and my granddaughter did not move for a full hour.

Lundi Mgijima, music director

Lundi has held the rostrum since 2019. He grew up in KwaZakhele, learned trumpet in a church band, and spent eleven years between Cape Town and Leipzig before coming home to take the post. He puts one South African work on every main-stage bill — a commission, an arrangement, or something out of the archive nobody has played since the seventies. He also takes the schools morning himself, which is why the Wednesday rehearsal starts late. Rehearsals are open to subscribers on the last Thursday of the month. Come at six, sit anywhere, leave when you like.
