Four hours to the gate

Phone before two and the crew clocks in on night shift. We hold a standby list for Epping, Bellville, Airport Industria and Paarl.

Registered and covered

Registered with the Department of Employment and Labour under the Employment Services Act, with a current COIDA letter of good standing in the file.

One invoice, all of it

Wages, UIF, provident and the bargaining council levy run off our payroll. You get hours on a line and nothing left to administer.

4 hours, most nights

Zaid Adams runs the night desk in Epping. When a cold store phones at half past one because eleven people did not arrive, he is not searching for anybody. He is working down a standby list he built that morning. We keep between forty and sixty people on standby every weekday, split across Epping, Bellville, Airport Industria and Paarl. They are told by ten whether the shift is likely, and paid a call-out whether it comes or not. That is the whole trick and it is not a clever one. Standby costs us money in a quiet week. It is also the only reason we can say four hours and mean it.

What we crew

Cold store and freezer crews — forklift, picking, palletising and stock counts, down to minus twenty-five. Licences checked against the TETA register before anybody sets foot in a chamber, and jackets issued from our own store.
Packhouse lines — sorting, grading, packing and end-of-line for pome fruit, citrus and table grapes, from the first week of January through to the close of the deciduous season in Ceres, Wolseley and Paarl.
Distribution and despatch — receiving, put-away, order picking, load checking and truck loading on day, night and weekend shifts, public holidays included and paid at the rate the BCEA says.
Plant, production and relief — bakery, beverage and FMCG lines, cleaning teams, and full relief crews to cover shutdown, stocktake and the December leave run.
