A guide front and back
Two of us on every trip. One sets the pace at the front, one walks last so nobody is ever alone on the path. Both have walked the route in the dark, because at some point everybody has to.
Permits and the sat phone
CapeNature, Ezemvelo and the Richtersveld park permits are ours to arrange, not yours. Every trip carries an Iridium handset, a full trauma kit and a written evacuation plan for each night’s camp.
Eight walkers, never nine
The wilderness permits cap a party at twelve. We stop at eight plus two guides, because ten people can share one water source and camp on one flat piece of ground without wrecking either.
Why only these four
We sell nothing we have not walked in the wet and the dry. Each route has been done at least twenty times by the person leading it, which is how we know where the water still is in a bad February.
Four routes, and that is the whole list.
We walk the same four every season instead of adding new ones. It is the only way anybody learns a mountain properly.

I have walked the Cederberg on my own for fifteen years and still learned three things about water on that trip.
On day four my knee went. They had a plan for that written down before we left Clanwilliam, and I was in Citrusdal by six.
Eight of us, two guides, and not one moment where I felt like a name on a list somebody was ticking off.
My daughter was sixteen on the Baviaans trip and they treated her exactly like the rest of us, which is all she wanted.
