A four-piece function band out of Pretoria. Everything played live in the room, no backing tracks, and we stop when the contract says so and not before.

Eleven years, mostly in halls

We started in 2015 playing sokkie evenings at the Moot Klubhuis in Pretoria and never really stopped. Same four people, about sixty functions a year, mostly weddings between Pretoria and Bela-Bela with a run of company year-ends through November and December. Everything you hear is played in the room. No backing track, no click track, no laptop running the horn line. That means we will not fake a song we cannot play as four people, so we would rather say no to a request than mime it — and it means the tempo follows the floor instead of the floor following the paper.

The load-in window

At the venue by 15h00, soundchecked by 16h30, which is before the first guest parks. If the ceremony is in the same room we build around it and check afterwards.

The request list

Send us twenty songs you want and ten you never want to hear again. We learn whatever we do not already play, and we hold the line on the ten.

PA and lighting

A 4 000-watt system that covers a marquee of 300, eight moving heads and four warm washes on the floor. It is in the quote, not a line item underneath it.

Three sets, two breaks

Fifty minutes on, twenty off, three times over. Our own playlist runs through the same desk in the gaps so the room never drops to silence.

A backup that plugs in

A second mixer, a spare bass head and a full box of spare cables travel in the trailer. In eleven years the music has stopped once, for nine minutes, in a Rustenburg power cut.

Your first dance, rehearsed

Send the song six weeks ahead. We arrange it for four people, put it in a key that suits the singer, and run it with you at the venue before guests arrive.

Started the band in a garage in Waverley in 2015. He does the quotes, the set lists and every first-dance arrangement, and he is the one who answers the phone.

Zanele Mokoena
Zanele MokoenaLead vocals

Sings in English, Afrikaans, Sesotho and isiZulu, which covers most of what a Gauteng dance floor asks for. Twelve years of session work before this.

Wian de Beer
Wian de BeerBass

Plays the whole night without a chart in front of him and has never yet been the reason a song fell apart. Teaches music at a school in Silverton during the week.

Sibusiso Khumalo

Came up through the church circuit in Mamelodi. He watches the floor rather than the band, and pulls the tempo back the moment the room needs him to.

If the floor is full I do not care what the set list says. We play the room, not the paper.

Tell us the day and the town. Every enquiry gets an answer within two working days, and if we are already taken we say so in the first line.

We are based in Pretoria and travel 250 km with no travel fee — Johannesburg, Hartbeespoort, Bela-Bela, Rustenburg, Middelburg. Further than that we add fuel and one room for six people. A standard booking is three sets of fifty minutes between 19h00 and 00h30, PA and lighting included. Extra time is R2 200 an hour. A guitarist or a sax player is R2 400 for the night. The deposit holds the date and nothing else does: 30 percent on signature, the balance seven days before. We will pencil you in for ten days while you decide, and we will phone you if somebody else asks for the same Saturday.
