Bromponie

The bikes already run past your kitchen

Bromponie is a rider network across eight Ekurhuleni townships. Four hundred kitchens sell through it. Yours can be on it by the end of the month.

Put your kitchen on

How it works

You cook. We take the order, we ride it, and we pay you the same evening. There is no app for you to learn and no month you have to commit to.

The bikes are ours

Two hundred and twelve riders on our own roster, on bikes we service every second Tuesday, in a jacket you can pick out from the top of the street.

Paid the same evening

Card, cash and SnapScan all come to us. Your money is in your account by seven that night, less one commission and nothing else after it.

One ward, nineteen minutes

We only pass you orders inside your own ward, so nothing sits in a bag on the R21 going cold while a rider hunts for the address.

A controller who knows you

One person per township, on WhatsApp from ten in the morning, who knows your name and knows the night the pap ran out.

Where the bikes run

  • Tembisa — 96 kitchens and three rider bases, from Esangweni through to Winnie Mandela
  • Katlehong — 74 kitchens, run out of the yard behind the Sontonga Mall rank
  • Vosloorus — 58 kitchens, riders out from Extension 9 from eleven in the morning
  • Daveyton — 47 kitchens, and the Etwatwa side came on in March
  • Thokoza — 41 kitchens, sharing Katlehong’s base on Khumalo Street
  • Tsakane — 33 kitchens, evenings only until the second controller starts
  • KwaThema — 29 kitchens, our newest ward, opened the week after Easter
  • Duduza — 22 kitchens, Fridays and Saturdays for now, weekdays from October

The app is the small part

Bromponie started in 2022 with four bikes, a WhatsApp group and eleven kitchens in Tembisa. Sipho ran the group off a phone on the counter at his mother’s shop and wrote every order into a school exercise book. It worked because everybody in it lived inside about two kilometres of everybody else. That is still the whole idea. We did not build a national platform and then go looking for townships to put on it. We built one ward, filled it with kitchens until the riders had a full day’s work in front of them, and only then opened the next one. Eight wards later the exercise book has become software, but the software does not decide anything a controller could not decide better. The riders are not contractors we found on a website. They are on our roster, on our bikes, with our fuel and our maintenance, and they are paid whether the day was busy or slow. That costs us more than the other way round. It is also why a kitchen in Vosloorus gets the same rider three afternoons running and stops having to explain where the gate is. What the app does is take the order, print your slip and move the money. Everything else on this page is people.

There is room on the next round

We open one ward at a time and we fill it with kitchens before a single rider is put on it. If yours is on the list the wait is about three weeks, and we will tell you where in it you are.

What a big app will not do for you

A person, not a ticket

One controller per township on WhatsApp, ten in the morning to nine at night. Nobody here has ever been asked to open a support case.

Containers at pallet price

Recyclable clamshells, lids and bags bought by the pallet and passed to you at what they cost us. No markup line, no minimum order.

The dropped plate is ours

If a bag goes over, or the food arrives cold because of us, we replace the plate and we carry it. It never comes off your payout.

A feature phone is enough

Nearly half our kitchens have no smartphone. Orders come as a call from your controller and a printed slip at the end of the week.

What it costs a kitchen

No joining fee either way. You can move between the two on the first of any month.

Put your kitchen on the network

We read these Monday and Thursday mornings. If your ward is running you can be taking orders inside a week. If it is not, we will tell you where on the list you are. Unit 4, Andrew Mapheto Drive, Tembisa 1632 011 316 2204
