Tied on by hand

No staple guns and no shortcuts. Every bundle is dressed with a leggett and wired to the batten, course by course, from the eaves up.

Albertinia dekriet

Cut on the Riversdale flats between April and August, then stacked in our yard for a full season before it goes near a ladder.

SANS 10407 and a conductor

Fire treatment sprayed before the ridge goes on, lightning conductor checked, and the certificates your insurer will ask for.

Twelve years to the next ridge

A properly laid Cape roof runs forty years. The ridge is the part that wears, and we come back for that, not for the whole roof.

Three generations on the same reed beds

My grandfather cut reed on the Gouritz flats and my father sewed his first ridge in 1979. Dekriet Thatchers has been registered since 1994, working out of a yard on the R325 outside Albertinia, and there are eleven of us on the ladders now. We do not subcontract. The man who measures your roof is on site every day of the job, and the foreman who signs it off is the one who quoted you. Most of our work sits between Mossel Bay and Stilbaai, though we have laid roofs as far as Nieu-Bethesda when the trip was worth it. Four things decide whether a thatch roof lasts forty years or fifteen. We are stubborn about all four. The reed — Albertinia dekriet only, cut April to August, stacked eighteen months in the yard before it is laid. The ridge — sewn in the same reed as the roof, never glued, and renewed on a twelve-year cycle. The wire — galvanised 2.5mm on treated SA pine battens, never nylon and never staples. The pitch — 45 degrees at the minimum. Below that the water walks instead of running, and no amount of good reed saves it.

Sews every ridge we put up. If you have picked a Dekriet roof out from the road, the line along the top is his work.

Walks the cutting fields at Albertinia and Riversdale each winter and turns away more bundles than he brings home.

What we take on

New thatch

Houses, lapas, bomas and entertainment areas, from the batten up. Booked in six-week blocks through the year.

Full re-thatch

Old reed stripped, battens replaced where they have gone, new reed laid to the same pitch and the same line.

Ridge replacement

The twelve-year job. Two to four days on an average house, and no reason for anyone to move out.

Storm and leak repair

We patch and re-dress the section that failed rather than talking you into a roof you do not need yet.

Insurance inspections

A written condition report with photographs, fire-treatment status and a conductor check, usually within a week.

Maintenance contracts

An annual walk-over for estates and lodges: brush down, check the wire, log what will need doing next season.

What owners say afterwards

They stripped forty years of reed off the farmhouse and had us watertight in eleven days. Not one broken tile on the stoep.
Rina de Villiers · Herbertsdale
The quote was per square metre and the final invoice matched it to the cent. I have never had that from a builder before.
Marius Kotze · Stilbaai
Our insurer wanted the SANS certificate and a conductor sign-off. Both were in my inbox before the scaffold came down.
Thembeka Ndlovu · Mossel Bay
Nine lodge roofs over two winters, the same crew every time, off site by five. Our guests never knew they were there.

How a job runs

  1. The measure. We come out, get up on the roof, take the square metres and check the battens, the pitch and what the old reed is hiding. It costs nothing and takes about an hour.
  2. The quote. A written price per square metre, split into reed, labour, battens, fire treatment and scaffold, with a start week against it. It holds for sixty days.
  3. The work. Scaffold up, old reed off, new reed laid from the eaves to the ridge. We photograph every day and clear the site every evening.
  4. The hand-over. Ridge sewn, fire treatment sprayed, conductor checked, offcuts carted away. You get the certificate, the guarantee and a date for the twelve-year ridge.
