Jib Crane Hire

The load goes up once

Mobile cranes from 25 to 220 tonnes out of a yard off the R21 at Kempton Park. Abnormal loads, tight factory yards and closed-road night work across Gauteng, the Mpumalanga highveld and the Bay.

The yard on Pomona Road

Jib is a crane hire firm on Pomona Road, off the R21 between Kempton Park and the airport. Hennie Marais bought the first machine second-hand in 2011 — a 25-tonne all-terrain with a lot of hours on it — and drove it himself for two years before he could afford a second operator. There are eleven cranes on the yard now, and Sipho Radebe and Gerrie van Wyk have both been in the cabs since 2014.

Every crane leaves here with a rigger on it, not only a driver. That is not an extra on the quote, it is the only way we know how to work. The rigger walks the ground before the outriggers go down, checks what the slings are rated for against what is actually being lifted, and has the authority to stop the job. Two men on site costs more per day than one. It is a great deal cheaper than dropping a transformer.

What the day rate covers

Eleven machines on the yard, 25 to 220 tonnes. This comes with any of them.

Rigging plan first

Nothing is picked until there is a plan on paper: load weight, centre of gravity, radius, ground bearing pressure and the crane configuration that covers it with margin. Signed by our lifting machine inspector and in your site file before we book a date.

Abnormal load escorts

Anything outside the legal envelope needs a provincial permit and escort vehicles front and rear. We hold the permits, run our own escort bakkies and do the route survey ourselves — the low bridges on the R21 have caught better outfits than us.

Night and weekend windows

Most of the big work happens when the plant is off or the road is closed. We rig on a Friday night and are packed up by Sunday lunch more weekends than not. The night rate is on the quote, not added to the invoice afterwards.

Serviced in our own workshop

Two bays and two fitters on the yard. Load-moment indicators calibrated, wire rope inspected on schedule, LMI and load-test certificates current on every machine. Nothing leaves here on a promise that it will probably be fine.

Placed to the millimetre

Chillers into rooftop plant rooms, machine beds onto grouted plinths, gantry legs onto pins. Slow luffing, a spotter on the radio, and taglines only — so nobody has a hand on the load while it is moving.

Operator and rigger on every job

Two of our people on every site. The operator stays in the cab and the rigger owns the ground: slings, shackles, exclusion zone, and the authority to stop the lift if the wind gets up. That second pair of eyes is the job.

Kempton Park to Richards Bay at forty

A 96-tonne transformer left this yard at nine on a Thursday night and reached the Bay on Sunday morning. Three nights, two provincial permits, an escort in front and one behind, and a man on foot at every bridge on the N2 watching the clearance. Average speed over the whole run was under forty. Abnormal load work is mostly paperwork and patience. The permit takes ten working days if the application is clean and three weeks if it is not. We do the route survey before we apply, because the department will happily approve a route we cannot actually drive, and then it is our problem at two in the morning outside Piet Retief. Send us the drawing early and we will tell you honestly whether the date you want is possible.

Send us the weight, the radius and a photo of the access.

With those three we can quote the same day. Guessing at any one of them is how a crane spends a shift standing still.

People who have used us

A four-hour road closure on the R23 and no second chance at it. Their rigger had the plan on the bonnet before the truck had stopped, and the beam was on the piers with fifty minutes left.
Kobus Delport · Site agent · Balfour
Two chillers onto a plant room roof with a tower block on one side and a live road on the other. They flew both on a Sunday and swept the pavement before they left.
Rashida Patel · Project manager · Sandton
The silo section came a day late from the manufacturer and they held the crane over at no charge, because the delay was not ours. Nobody in this trade does that.
Hendrik Nel · Chairman · Delmas grain co-op
Nine years I have used them. In nine years one machine broke down on my site, and the replacement was through the gate inside three hours.

Where it sits now, where it must land, and how close a crane can actually get. Overhead lines and soft ground matter more than anything else you can tell us.
