Kerb

What people are actually wearing on Bree, Long, Vilakazi and outside the Rand Club at half past five on a Friday. Photographed on the street, not on a runway, and never styled by us.

We publish three features a week and one round-up on Sundays. Nothing is sponsored, and when it is we say so at the top.

The return of the ugly shoe

Two winters ago you could not give away a chunky sole in Braamfontein. This month we counted eleven pairs in ninety minutes outside one coffee shop. What changed is not the shoe. It is that the trousers finally got wide enough to make it make sense.

Nine years shooting street style, mostly in Johannesburg. Will stop you on a pavement and she will ask nicely first.

Came from menswear retail, which means he can tell you what something cost and whether it was worth it.

Nobody is buying new denim

Every second pair we photographed this month was second-hand, and most of the people wearing them volunteered that fact before we asked. The interesting part is that they can all name the shop. Provenance has replaced the label as the thing worth mentioning.

Winter dressing in a city with no winter

Cape Town gets four seasons before lunch and Johannesburg gets one long dry cold that nobody dresses for properly. The result is the most interesting layering in the country happening in the wrong city, for the wrong reason.

What we cover

Street

Photographed where we found it, name and suburb, nothing arranged.

Interviews

Short, on the pavement, usually under four minutes.

Counted

We count things. Ninety minutes, one corner, one item.

Secondhand

Where it came from and what it cost, when people will tell us.
