Krans

The map works when the signal does not

Offline trail maps for the mountains people actually walk.

Free, and it stays free

The maps, the routes and the offline downloads cost nothing and always will. Premium adds the things only a few people need.

See both plans

3 450 m

That is how much climbing the Hottentots Holland traverse puts under you across two days, and it is the number people get wrong most often when they plan it. Krans works it out from the actual line you draw, not from a straight distance, so the day you plan is the day you get.

What it does up there

Works with no signal

Download a range before you leave and the whole map lives on your phone. No bars, no problem.

Kind to the battery

The screen sleeps and the track keeps recording. A full day out costs about fifteen percent.

Water and fynbos

Streams that actually run in February, and what is flowering, marked by people who walked it last month.

Share your line

Send someone the exact route and your turnaround time before you go. They see it move.

Checked on foot, not from a desk

Every route on Krans has been walked by someone who then came back and fixed it. Paths close, rivers move and cairns fall over. When a route changes we mark it as unverified until a person has been out there again. That is slower than scraping data, and it is the whole point.

Two plans, that is it

No trial, no tiers you have to decode.

A path washed away, a new cairn, a stream that has dried up. This is how the maps stay honest.

About the maps

Base data is community mapping, corrected on the ground and re-drawn by hand where it was wrong. Contours are 20 m. Nothing here replaces a paper map and the sense to turn around.
