The studio
Lintel is Anele Mthembu and Rieta van Zyl, and on a busy month two people helping. We work on the top floor of an old paint factory in Woodstock, above a company that still makes paint. We are not much interested in knocking things down. Nearly every job we take on starts with a building that is standing and mostly working: a shop with flats over it, a shed with a good roof, a house somebody added onto badly in 1978. The work is deciding what to keep. We draw everything ourselves, we are on site every week, and we tell you what a thing is likely to cost before you have paid us to find out. Both of us are registered with SACAP and Rieta sits on the Woodstock heritage committee. If the building work comes to less than about R400 000 we will usually say so and send you to someone better suited. It has cost us jobs and we are still doing it.
