The short version

Fetched and returned free

The vans run every suburb twice a week. Leave the bag inside the gate before 08h00 on your day and it comes back to the same doorstep two days later, at no charge on any plan.

Two working days

Collected Tuesday, back Thursday. Collected Friday, back Monday. Duvets and heavy curtains take a day longer because they have to dry properly, and we say so when we load them.

Counted in, counted out

Every bag is counted onto a ticket at the depot and counted again before it goes back on the van. The slip is in the bag, so you can check it against your own count at the door.

Cold water, and not much of it

We wash at 30 degrees on a recycled rinse and line-dry whatever the weather allows. In a Cape winter the dryers run, and the price on your plan does not move because of it.

If something comes back marked, phone us that day

Every bag is opened on the sorting table before anything sees water. Pockets emptied, colours split, and anything with a mark on it pulled aside and treated by hand first. That is where most of the damage on a laundry floor gets prevented, so that is where the most experienced people stand. Sometimes it still goes wrong. A red sock nobody saw, a ballpoint left in a school shirt, a stain that was already set before it reached us. When it does, we want to hear about it the same day, while there is still something to be done — a second treatment usually lifts it, and a shirt that has been through a hot dryer twice usually will not. If we marked it and we cannot fix it, we pay for it. Replacement cost, not a credit against next month, and we do not argue about whether you should have told us the label said dry clean only. Ask around Salt River: that is not the usual arrangement, which is exactly why it is printed here.

Wash, dry, fold

Sorted by colour, washed at 30 degrees, lined or tumbled depending on the weather, folded flat and returned in your own bag.

Shirts on hangers

Pressed by hand and hung, never folded afterwards. Collars and cuffs are done separately, which is the part the machines get wrong.

Duvets and curtains

Anything too big for a domestic machine goes into the 18 kg drum. Allow three days for a winter duvet, and tell us if the curtains still have hooks in.

Nothing gets mixed

One household, one net bag, one ticket number. Bags are never combined to fill a machine, not even at half a load on a quiet Wednesday.

The round, and what two days actually means

The van does Woodstock, Salt River and Observatory on Mondays and Thursdays. Mowbray, Rosebank and Rondebosch on Tuesdays and Fridays. Newlands, Claremont, Kenilworth and Wynberg on Wednesdays and Saturdays. You pick your day when you sign up and it stays your day. Two working days is the promise and we hold it on about nine loads in ten. The tenth is usually a duvet in July that is not dry by the time the van leaves, and in that case somebody phones you rather than letting the bag simply not arrive. Ironing is done on this same floor — a roller press for flat work, a hand iron for shirts. It goes home on hangers in a bag rather than folded, because a folded ironed shirt wastes everybody’s afternoon.
