Every bag is opened on the sorting table before anything sees water. Pockets emptied, colours split, and anything with a mark on it pulled aside and treated by hand first. That is where most of the damage on a laundry floor gets prevented, so that is where the most experienced people stand. Sometimes it still goes wrong. A red sock nobody saw, a ballpoint left in a school shirt, a stain that was already set before it reached us. When it does, we want to hear about it the same day, while there is still something to be done — a second treatment usually lifts it, and a shirt that has been through a hot dryer twice usually will not. If we marked it and we cannot fix it, we pay for it. Replacement cost, not a credit against next month, and we do not argue about whether you should have told us the label said dry clean only.
