I have been teaching children to swim since 2008, first at the old Lyttelton municipal pool and since 2016 in our own heated indoor pool off Cantonments Road. I take every Waterwise and Learn to Swim lesson myself, and the Wednesday stroke correction lane as well. Rugslag is me, two assistants and one pool. Beginner lanes stop at four children. At four I can still see all four faces at once and get a hand to any of them inside a second. Put six in and somebody swims every third length while the rest hang on the wall and get cold, and a cold child stops listening. That is the only reason the timetable looks the way it does.

Four ways into the water

Every group swims two 30-minute lessons a week through the Gauteng school terms. Fees are billed per term, and a lesson missed for illness is made up in any lane at the same level.

Waterwise

Ages 2 to 4, with a parent in the water for the first term. Bubbles, floating on the back, and getting to the wall on their own. Four pairs to a lane. R760 a term.

Learn to swim

Ages 4 to 8, no parent in the water. Front crawl and rugslag over 15 metres, safe entry and exit, and a minute of treading water. Four to a lane. R880 a term.

Stroke correction

Ages 8 and up who can already swim a length but fight the water the whole way. Breathing, catch and kick, one thing at a time. Six to a lane. R880 a term.

Squad

Club trials and school galas. Forty-five minutes on the clock, starts off the blocks, Saturday mornings only. Eight to a lane. R1 040 a term.
