What we come out for

Four kinds of work, one crew, one chipper.

Felling

Sectional dismantling on ropes where there is nowhere for a trunk to fall. Between the wall, the pool and the roof, it comes down in pieces.

Crown & pruning

Reduction, thinning, deadwooding and raising over a driveway. Cut at the branch collar so the tree seals itself instead of rotting.

Stump grinding

Ground 300mm below grade so you can lay lawn or paving straight over it. Chips raked back in or carted off, your call.

Storm damage

A tree across the driveway at two in the morning. We clear it, make the stand safe, and send the photographs your insurer will ask for.

Doing it properly costs about the same as doing it badly

Anyone with a bakkie and a chainsaw can drop a tree. The difference shows up afterwards, in the flattened irrigation line, the cracked pool coping, the neighbour’s carport, or the protected stinkwood you were never allowed to touch in the first place. So we rig. On a stand with no fall zone every limb comes down on a rope to a groundsman, not onto your lawn. We check the municipal and national lists before we quote, and if the tree is protected we say so and apply for the permit rather than pretending it is not there. Boards go over the beds, the chipper works off the pavement, and the site is raked before we ask you to sign anything. The four questions everybody asks us are answered further down this page.

Why people phone us back

Insured to R10 million

Public liability cover, and the certificate is emailed with the quote — before anybody climbs anything.

Climbers, not ladders

Two roped climbers on the crew and a groundsman on the tag line. Nothing on our sites is done off a ladder.

A two-hour window

Not “sometime Tuesday”. If the crew is held up on the N1 you get a phone call, not silence.

The site is left clean

Brash chipped, rounds stacked where you want them, beds boarded, lawn raked and the driveway swept by knock-off.

One number, one owner

Rikus quotes the job and works on it. You are not handed to a call centre and you are not quoted by someone who never saw the tree.

Fixed price, in writing

The quote is what you pay. Nobody finds extra work once the chipper is already parked on your verge.

Homeowners and body corporates

Two dead blue gums over the back rooms, both of them taller than the house. In and out in a day, and afterwards I could not tell you where the chipper had stood.
Marina de Wet · Homeowner, Northcliff
Forty-one units and the trees had not been touched since 2016. They quoted per tree, worked through it over three Saturdays, and the trustees have had no complaints since.
Sipho Mahlangu · Trustee, Fourways
A syringa came down across the driveway at two in the morning. He answered the phone, and the road was open before I left for work.

The four questions

What does it cost to take a tree down?

It depends entirely on what is underneath it. A twelve-metre pine in an open garden with a clear drop zone runs around R4 500. The same tree over a tiled roof, rigged down piece by piece, is closer to R9 000, because that is a full day for a crew instead of two hours. We come out and quote for nothing, and the number does not move afterwards.

Do I need permission to remove a tree?

Sometimes. Protected species — real yellowwood, camel thorn, white stinkwood and the rest of the national list — need a licence from the department, and parts of Johannesburg and Tshwane have street-tree and heritage rules on top of that. We check before we quote. If a permit is needed we apply for it, and we do not start cutting until it is issued.

Do you take the wood away?

Yes, unless you want it. Brash goes through the chipper on site, the rounds are cut to fireplace length and stacked wherever you point, and whatever you do not want leaves on the truck the same day. Removal is inside the quoted price — there is no separate dumping fee at the end.

What about my lawn, my beds and my neighbour’s wall?

Boards go down over the irrigation and the beds before anything comes off the tree, the chipper stays on the pavement or the driveway, and we walk the boundary with you before the first cut. We are insured to R10 million, we have not had to use it, and the certificate comes with the quote either way.
